How would you help somebody grow spiritually?

We are trying to write a brief resource that we can send to people who mark on their communication card that they would like information about “Growing in my faith.” Of course, every person and situation is different, but we think there are some key truths that can be universally helpful in stimulating spiritual growth

We’ll post a final version soon, but in the meantime…

What principles would YOU include if somebody was asking you how he or she could grow in faith? Click here to reply.

Some principles that I would share would include:

    1) Daily (or at least regular) time in the Word, reading through a book of the Bible and applying questions (through journaling for me) such as, “What does this passage teach me about God? What does it teach me about humankind and me? How would my life be different if I applied these Truths to my life? (and writing these applications down) and meditating on a Scripture that stood out to me. (All borrowed from Pastor Tim Keller)
    2) Prayer without ceasing. Praying during the devotional time about the Truths that he brought to light by adoring and thanking Him, confessing my sin, and bringing needs to Him (spiritual as well as physical). Also, praying specifically that God would show me particular ways in which I could serve Him more. Perhaps conviction was brought through the Scripture reading and God may give a specific direction through that illumination such as asking someone for forgiveness, reaching out to someone in need, asking a fellow believer for prayer, or bringing God’s Truth to an unbeliever.
    3) Meeting with others to pray, share, talk, and enjoy fellowship. Growth cannot happen in isolation alone. Meeting with others spurs us on.
    4) Serving God by giving of our time, money, gifts, service, etc. The more we give, the more we want to give and it becomes less and less about ourselves and more and more about God and others. It helps us to live with open hands and hearts.

These are the things that have helped me to grow. Praise God!

Romans 8:6 To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Susan, those are many of the things that were coming to mind for me too. Thanks for your input!

Do something hard for the kingdom. Something beyond yourself.

Kristie, that’s one of the things I included as well. The idea of risk. The more we risk, the more we depend, and the more we grow. Great thought.
